Wheelie bin enclosure: privacy that matches your home
Three bins next to the driveway are the first thing guests see. A wheelie bin enclosure houses them, keeps them out of sight and turns the space back into part of the garden. Access remains convenient: open the front, take out the bin, done.
The bins are protected rather than merely concealed. Stahlfred, Holzmichl and Alubert have fully enclosed walls on all sides, while Dagobert features a slatted design and is therefore particularly airy. The base remains open on all four lines so air can circulate. Each line has a modular design and can later be expanded with additional compartments if another waste category is added.
You can choose between four lines that differ in material and appearance but work the same way: a load-bearing body, an opening front and a roof of your choice, either a hinged lid or a planted roof. Which material for your wheelie bin enclosure?
All four lines are built for long-term outdoor use and withstand the effects of the weather for years. The difference lies in the surface, appearance, and how noticeable you want the enclosure to be.
Dagobert: galvanized and coated steel in a slatted design, the classic choice for a robust solution that does not draw attention. Six colors and three wood-look fronts.
Stahlfred: hot-dip galvanized steel with a powder coating and clean lines. A central lock for the lid and door is included.
Alubert: powder-coated aluminum, lighter in weight and easier to handle, with the greatest adjustment range at the feet.
Holzmichl: hot-dip galvanized, powder-coated steel body with a front made of spruce wood. This is a genuine wooden wheelie bin enclosure, not a printed wood effect and not a film. If you like the look of wood but prefer to care for metal, Dagobert offers wood-look fronts.
If you have previously looked at enclosures made of plastic or WPC: The main difference is dimensional stability over the years and the fact that a metal body does not warp. For the overall appearance of your home, it also matters that coated surfaces retain their color longer than colored plastics.
From one to six bins
Bin enclosures are available to suit the number of bins you have. Start with the number currently on your property, and plan for an additional compartment in case another waste category is added. Retrofitting is possible for all four lines because they are all modular.
The internal depth varies depending on the line. For Stahlfred and Holzmichl, it is 77 centimetres; for Alubert and Dagobert models for 240 litres, it is 78.5 centimetres. The Dagobert for 120 litres is deliberately narrower at 63 centimetres. This means that standard bins used in Germany and Austria in accordance with DIN EN 840 fit inside, regardless of which waste collection provider operates in your area.

Cladding, enclosure, or box: what is the difference?
The terms are used interchangeably in the trade, and they usually mean the same thing. Nevertheless, distinguishing between them is worthwhile because it makes your choice easier.
Open partition: a wall or element that merely conceals the bins. Inexpensive, but the weather and animals can still get close, and the overall appearance remains untidy.
Cladding with a load-bearing body: side walls, front, and roof form one unit, while the base remains open. The bins are protected, and the front can be closed on most product lines. This is the construction method you will find on this page, and what many people also call a garbage bin box.
Enclosure: the same concept, usually used when several bins are housed for a multi-unit residential building. From four bins onward, most people refer to it as an enclosure.
For your decision, this means: if you only want to block the view, a partition is sufficient. If the bins are to be kept clean and orderly and the installation is to be durable, you need the load-bearing body. Garbage bin enclosures of this type can also be installed without having to screw them to the ground.
Location, Ground Conditions, and Slope
The enclosure is only as good as the ground beneath it. A firm, level surface works best: concrete slabs, paving, or a compacted gravel base. On soft grass, any structure will sink over time.
You can compensate for slight unevenness using the height-adjustable feet. Stahlfred and Holzmichl offer an adjustment range of 15 to 60 millimeters, while Alubert offers 10 to 75 millimeters. Dagobert has no height-adjustable feet, so the ground should be as level as possible from the outset.
If the adjustment range is insufficient because your property slopes more steeply, the better option is to install several smaller modules in a stepped arrangement instead of one continuous unit. Two double units side by side follow a slope much more cleanly than one continuous four-unit enclosure and create a calmer overall appearance.

Leichte Neigungen gleichst du über die höhenverstellbaren Füße aus, bei Stahlfred und Holzmichl über 15 bis 60 Millimeter, bei Alubert über 10 bis 75 Millimeter. Der Dagobert hat keine verstellbaren Füße und braucht einen möglichst planen Untergrund. Bei stärkerem Gefälle setzt du besser mehrere kleinere Module treppenweise nebeneinander.
Bei Stahlfred und Holzmichl ist ein zentrales Schloss für Deckel und Tür serienmäßig im Lieferumfang. Der Dagobert hat eine Knebelverriegelung, ein Schlüsselschloss gibt es für Modelle ab Baujahr 2023 im Zubehör. Der Alubert schließt über einen im Griff integrierten Verschlussmechanismus.
Der Einlegeboden schafft zusätzlichen Stauraum, etwa für Streusalz, Splitt und Gartenutensilien. Außerdem lassen sich damit kleinere Tonnen mit 30 oder 50 Litern auf eine angenehme Arbeitshöhe bringen. Er ist für Dagobert, Stahlfred und Holzmichl erhältlich.
Der Klappdeckel ist die schlichte Lösung und öffnet mit der Front. Das Pflanzdach nimmt eine flache Bepflanzung auf und baut dadurch etwas höher. Beide Varianten gibt es für Dagobert, Stahlfred und Holzmichl.
Verzinkter oder pulverbeschichteter Stahl ist die robusteste Wahl, Aluminium ist leichter zu handhaben, und der Holzmichl bringt mit einer Front aus echtem Fichtenholz eine wärmere Optik. Alle vier Linien sind langlebig und wetterbeständig ausgelegt.
Ventilation and Odor
Odors develop where moisture and heat come together and there is no air circulation. That is why the base is open on all four lines: air flows in from below instead of becoming trapped. With the Dagobert, the slats all around also ensure good airflow.
Two additional measures can help. If possible, do not place the enclosure in the blazing midday sun, as shade noticeably lowers the temperature inside.
