Why a garbage bin box with a planted roof makes sense
A garbage bin box with a planted roof conceals the garbage bins and gives you back the footprint as a green space. Instead of a bare metal cover, there is a flat planter tray on top that you plant yourself. Especially in the entrance area or front garden, where the boxes are in view, this is the difference between a purely functional piece of furniture and an eye-catcher.
What a plantable garbage bin box specifically offers:
- Appearance: The greenery softens the box’s hard edges and integrates it into the overall look of a flower bed or lawn.
- Microclimate: The substrate and plants heat up less in the sun than a bare sheet-metal surface. This helps improve the microclimate and air quality directly in front of the house.
- Habitat: Depending on the plants, insects and bees find food on the roof, for example with stonecrop or flowering herbs. Every plant in the space makes a small contribution to biodiversity in residential areas.

Plantable garbage bin box: these three models are available with a planted roof
Not every garbage bin box can be planted. If you are looking for a plantable garbage bin box, BIO Stefan offers three model lines to choose from. They offer the planting roof as a roof option, each from 1 box to 6 boxes. All three are built to be robust and durable:
- Dagobert garbage bin box with planting roof: galvanized sheet steel with a scratch-resistant coating and a lid that can be mounted on either side. In the 120-liter version, at 68 cm, it is the lowest of the three boxes.
- Stahlfred garbage bin box with planting roof: hot-dip galvanized sheet steel, powder-coated, with a fully enclosed housing. A central lock for the lid and door is included.
- Holzmichl garbage bin box with planting roof: the same steel construction as Stahlfred, but with a front made of real spruce wood that you can oil or paint.
For all three lines, the planting roof makes the box 5.5 cm higher than the lid version. However, the absolute heights vary depending on the model and bin size; the exact dimensions are listed on the respective product page.

Garbage bin boxes with a planted roof from 1 box to 6 boxes
How many waste containers do you need to accommodate? The size depends on that. All three lines are available as 1 box, 2 boxes, 3 boxes, 4 boxes, 5 boxes and 6 boxes, each for bins with a capacity of 120 liters or 240 liters. The 240-liter version is the common standard.
- 1 box and 2 boxes: for general and organic waste, typical for apartments or small households.
- 3 boxes: the most common choice for single-family homes, usually for general waste, organic waste and paper.
- 4-box box: when a yellow recycling bag or glass is added. A planted roof for 4 bins visually unifies the row: A 4-box garbage bin box with a planted roof still creates a cohesive overall look.
- 5 boxes and 6 boxes: for multi-unit buildings or when several households share the parking area.
The larger the box, the more space for plants you get on top. A 3-box garbage bin box with a planted roof already provides a continuous planting area across the entire width.
Green roof in everyday use: no dismantling, no repotting
The most common concern before buying: Do I have to handle the roof every time I throw away the trash? No. The planted roof remains firmly mounted, and the plants stay in place. You don’t change your routine; you simply access the bin through the front door instead of the lid.
How do you throw away the trash?
- Open the box’s front door.
- Pull out the garbage bin or tilt it slightly forward.
- Put in the waste and slide the bin back.
On collection day, the roof stays where it is: You only pull out the bin. You don’t need to remove or store the soil, drainage layer, or plants.
One point many people only consider later: When watering and replanting, you stand in front of the box. So make sure there is enough space to move around in front of it, especially with a 4-box garbage bin box or larger.
Drainage: the most important point for a planted roof
A planting tray is shallow. This means water cannot seep away as it does in a garden bed; instead, it collects. This is exactly where most green roofs fail. Waterlogging displaces oxygen from the substrate, the roots rot, and the plants die.
The structure from bottom to top is therefore as follows:
- Drainage layer: absorbs excess rainwater and drains it away.
- Filter fleece: separates the substrate from the drainage layer so that it does not become clogged with sediment.
- Substrate: as permeable as possible, not a solid block of potting soil.
- Planting: shallow-rooted and drought-tolerant.
For the Dagobert, there is a precisely fitting drainage system consisting of a drainage mat and perforated sheet metal, resistant to UV rays and rot, and cut to fit the respective box size. You can see which accessories are suitable for your configuration on the respective product page.
Essentially, this is green roofing on a small scale: the same layer structure as on a flat roof, just covering a few square metres. If you prevent waterlogging, it requires little maintenance.

Sturdy, durable boxes made of powder-coated steel
A wheelie bin enclosure stands outdoors all year round. That is why all three lines use galvanized steel with a high-quality powder coating: powder-coated steel is weather-resistant, scratch-resistant, and remains colorfast even after years. The sturdy construction not only withstands the weather but also supports substrate and plants on top.
With Dagobert, the coating meets corrosion and UV classes RC4 and RUV4 according to EN 10169. Visually, you get steel in anthracite RAL 7016 as the most affordable standard color; additional RAL shades can be selected for an extra charge.
As for security: Stahlfred and Holzmichl can be locked with the central lock, protecting the contents from unauthorized access. With Dagobert, this is handled as standard by the toggle lock.
Depending on the model, shipping is either in a flat pack or on a pallet. The boxes are packaged so that two people can set them up.
Assembly and Care of the garbage bin box with Green Roof
All boxes come as flatpacks and are assembled on-site using metric screws. The most important factor is the ground: if the box is not level, the door and lid will not close properly, and water will collect on one side of the Green Roof. A level base also protects the door hinges in the long term.
Stahlfred and Holzmichl have height-adjustable feet with an adjustment range of 15 to 60 mm, compensating for a slight slope or a paving edge. Caring for the Green Roof is straightforward:
- water regularly in summer; shallow trays dry out faster than a garden bed
- top up the substrate when it settles
- prune in spring, depending on the plants
- keep leaves and vegetation clear of the water drainage
You only need to hose down the box itself. With the Holzmichl, you can also oil or paint the spruce wood front if you want to refresh its color.

Nein. Das Pflanzdach bleibt fest montiert. Zum Entleeren ziehst du die Mülltonnen im Inneren heraus oder neigst sie leicht nach vorne, je nach Modell. Erde und Pflanzen bleiben drin. Du musst nichts abbauen oder verstauen.
Why is a drainage system important for a planted roof?
Staunässe ist der häufigste Fehler bei flachen Pflanzwannen. Zu viel Wasser bedeutet: Sauerstoff fehlt, und es droht Wurzelfäule. Darum braucht es eine Drainageschicht aus Drainagematte, Trennvlies und durchlässigem Substrat. So läuft überschüssiges Regenwasser ab und die Wurzeln bleiben belüftet.
