Built-in gas grill: flush with the countertop instead of a freestanding unit beside it
A built-in gas grill sits flush with the countertop instead of standing beside it as a freestanding unit. That is exactly what turns a grilling area into a proper outdoor kitchen: a continuous front, counter space right next to the grill, and no cart to put away in autumn.
At BIO Stefan, you can find built-in grills from Napoleon, Broil King, Flammkraft, Grandhall and Big Green Egg. The range extends from compact two-burner models for narrow outdoor kitchens to seven-burner units with infrared technology. All models are designed for installation in our custom-made outdoor kitchens.
The key differences are the number of burners, power in kilowatts, grilling area and the material of the cooking grates. A four-burner unit with around 18 kW is suitable for a family's everyday needs. If you regularly grill for larger groups or want to cook directly and indirectly at the same time, choose five or more burners and a larger grilling area.
The comparison table below shows all models side by side, including the number of burners, power, grilling area and grate material. If you are just getting started, it is best to plan the grill together with the kitchen from the outset: In the outdoor kitchen configurator, you can put together the modules, width and features, and we will coordinate the appropriate cutout for your grill.

Two things stand out in the table. First, the Broil King Imperial S 570 BI is the only grill in the range designed for natural gas. All other models run on propane from a gas bottle. Second, the number of burners alone says little: the Baron 520 Shadow and the Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 500 both have five main burners, but differ in output by around 10 kW.
The two Big Green Egg ceramic grills are not included in the table because they use charcoal rather than gas. More about them below.
How many burners and how much power do you need?
The number of burners is the first criterion because it determines how many zones you can operate at the same time. With two burners, you can grill directly on one side and indirectly on the other. With four or more burners, you can operate a hot searing zone and a milder zone for finishing in parallel without rearranging anything.
Our range spans from the Flammkraft Block Ds Gen 5 with two stainless steel burners and around 12 to 14 kW to the Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 665 with five main burners plus additional infrared burners and around 28 to 30 kW. In between is the range that suits most households: the Napoleon 500 Series with four burners and around 16 to 18 kW or the Grandhall MAXIM G5 with five burners and around 19 to 21 kW.
More kilowatts do not automatically mean better performance. What matters is the ratio of power to grilling area. The Broil King Imperial S 570 BI delivers 16.1 kW across an 81 × 49 cm main grilling area and also has a 77 × 20 cm warming rack, creating space for side dishes while meat is still on the main grate. The Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 500 delivers around 25 kW across 71 × 46 cm, meaning significantly more power over a smaller area. Both are sensible configurations; they are simply designed for different grilling habits.
If you are unsure about the size, use the grilling area as your guide rather than the number of burners. The range extends from ~60 × 45 cm on the Block Ds to 94 × 46 cm on the BI Prestige PRO 665. That is around 2,700 compared with 4,300 cm², or a good 60 percent more space on the grate.
Gas cylinder or natural gas: what do you need?
Most built-in grills in our range run on propane gas from a gas bottle. This is the flexible solution: you do not need a gas connection, but you do need storage space for the bottle, which we plan into the kitchen unit.
One exception is the Broil King Imperial S 570 BI. It is designed for natural gas and comes with an EFV-protected 37-mbar hose and pressure regulator. If a natural gas connection is available or can be installed on the patio, you will no longer need to replace the bottle. The connection itself should be handled by a licensed professional.
Clarify this point early, as it determines how the modules are arranged: a bottle-powered grill needs a base cabinet to accommodate the bottle, while a natural gas appliance does not.
Stainless steel or cast iron: the grate material
When it comes to grill grates, there are two lines in the range, and both have their place.
Stainless steel grates heat up quickly, are easy to clean, and are resistant to moisture. They are used, among others, in the Flammkraft Block D Gen 5, the Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 500, and the Napoleon 700 Series PHANTOM 32".
Cast iron grates retain significantly more heat, creating a more defined sear pattern on steak and vegetables. They are used in the Broil King Baron 420 and Baron 520 Shadow. The Grandhall MAXIM G5 uses porcelain-coated cast iron, combining heat retention with an easier-to-maintain surface. A middle ground is cast stainless steel, as used in the Broil King Regal 520 and the Imperial S 570 BI.
Infrared, rear burner and rotisserie spit
Beyond the main burners, the additional features determine how versatile the grill is.
A rear burner is mounted on the back wall and radiates forward. Together with a rotisserie, it cooks chicken or roasts evenly from the outside without fat dripping into the flames. The Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 500 has a rear infrared burner and an additional side infrared burner.
With the Broil King Imperial S 570 BI, the rotisserie set with rod and electric motor is included, powered by its own 4.4 kW infrared rotisserie burner. It also features two integrated cooking chamber lights and six LED-lit control knobs, which makes a noticeable difference when grilling after dark.
The Broil King Regal 420, the Regal 520, and the Grandhall MAXIM G5 come with a side burner for a pot or pan. It is optional on the Grandhall Elite G4 PRO. Neither of the two Baron models has one.
Charcoal instead of gas: Big Green Egg
Not everyone wants gas. The two ceramic grills, Big Green Egg Large and Big Green Egg Medium, use charcoal and can also be integrated into a custom outdoor kitchen.
The ceramic construction retains heat very well and therefore covers a wide temperature range, from slow smoking to high-heat searing. The Large offers a round grilling surface with a diameter of 46 cm at a height of 84 cm, while the Medium measures 38 cm in diameter and 72 cm in height. The difference in weight is significant: 73 kg versus 51 kg. Keep this in mind when planning the cabinet, as a ceramic grill requires a suitably load-bearing base.
This is how the grill comes into your outdoor kitchen
On each product page, you’ll find the external dimensions for width, depth, and height. The exact cutout dimensions for the countertop depend on the model and the layout of your kitchen, so we determine them together with you during the planning process rather than providing a blanket specification. The respective manufacturer specifies the safety clearances from adjacent materials in the installation instructions, and we use these to plan the cutout.
The grill is just one module. You can complement it with a burner as an additional cooking station and a sink, so preparation and cleaning can take place outdoors. You can find accessories and spare parts together under Grills and Accessories. Our Outdoor Kitchen gives you an overview of all cabinet variants, fronts, and countertops.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions about built-in gas grillsA built-in gas grill is installed directly into the countertop of your outdoor kitchen and does not have its own base. This creates a continuous work surface, while the space beneath the grill can be used for storage. A freestanding grill stands on a cart and can be moved. All grills in this category are designed for installation in our custom-made outdoor kitchens.
The external dimensions of each model are listed on the respective product page under the technical data. We determine the exact cutout dimensions for the countertop together during the planning process, as they depend on the model, cabinet body, and countertop thickness. Use the Outdoor Kitchen Configurator or contact us directly.
Most models in this category run on propane from a gas bottle. You therefore do not need a permanent connection, but you do need a base cabinet that houses the bottle. The Broil King Imperial S 570 BI is designed for natural gas and comes with an EFV-protected 37 mbar hose and pressure regulator. The natural gas connection itself must be installed by a licensed professional.
Two burners are enough for direct and indirect grilling. Four burners are the standard for families and allow a hot zone and a milder zone in parallel. Five burners or more are worthwhile if you regularly grill for larger groups or prepare several dishes at the same time. The models in this category cover two to five main burners.
Both have advantages. Stainless steel grates heat up faster and are easier to clean. Cast-iron grates retain more heat and create a more pronounced sear pattern, but require a little more care. Porcelain-coated cast iron and cast stainless steel are middle-ground options that combine both properties.
The rear burner is located at the back and radiates horizontally toward the front. Combined with a rotisserie, it cooks chicken or roasts evenly all around without fat dripping directly into the flames. The Broil King Imperial S 570 BI includes the rotisserie set with rod and electric motor, while the Napoleon BI Prestige PRO 500 has a rear infrared burner.
Yes. The two ceramic grills, Big Green Egg Large and Big Green Egg Medium, can also be integrated into a custom outdoor kitchen. When choosing the base, consider the weight: the Large weighs 73 kg, while the Medium weighs 51 kg.
